Dating from 1850 this riverside pub was originally the Spade & Beckett before becoming the George, then the George & Dragon. In the early 1970's it returned to being the Spade & Beckett. It appeared in the 1979 Good Beer Guide and also in six of the following seven editions. It later became the Rat & Parrot. In 2004 it became La Mimosa pizza restaurant and remained so for over 20 years. In spring 2025, after extensive refurbishment, it reopened as Byron's Bear, a free of tie pub. Pizzas and keg beer available from the Bear Hatch outside which also offers a breakfast menu from 9 until noon.
