The Great Northern has been through many incarnations and names in the past, and is now under the management of the same Cambs Cuisine team that run the Chop Houses, Tickell Arms, Mill Works etc. The decor is in line with their other Smokeworks restaurant on Free School Lane, and can probably best be described as 'steampunk'. Bar area to the left of the door is set up for drinkers, with stashes of American superhero comics in the bench seats at the side, and multilingual ephemera decorating the walls. To the right and downstairs to the cellar is the restaurant area. The food is fairly meat oriented ('pulled' is a word used often), but there are vegetarian options. Two real ales, usually Brewsters Hophead and one from Nene Valley, craft keg offerings regularly including Harviestoun and Nene Valley.
