Waggon & Horses39 High Street
Imposing mock-Tudor one-room pub, rebuilt after a pre-war fire. The wooden bar, lined with barstools, faces you on entry. Seating areas are to the left and right. There is a large garden to the rear. Once a Good Beer Guide (2001 to 2012 editions) pub run by legendary landlord Nick Winnington, and his wife Mandy, until their retirement in 2012. Initially it remained a pub though not to the previous standard. In 2014 it was turned into an Italian restaurant where non-eating drinkers were not welcome. Thankfully in October 2017 it reopened as friendly pub once more and now offers a choice of up to five ales from Elgoods and other regional brewers. Ales are £3 a pint between 4 and 8 on Tuesdays. Food ranges from coffee & cakes Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9-11am, brunch from 10:30, lunches 12-2 to Sunday Carvery 12-4. There is also a gourmet food van each Thursday evening.
